WHY SHOULD AFFORESTATION BE ENCOURAGED?

Forestry has been recognised by the European Union as having a major role to play both in the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy and in the wider context of rural development. The Afforestation Grant and Forest Premium Schemes, introduced under EU Council Regulation 2080/92, are part of the accompanying measures to CAP reform and support the afforestation of agricultural land. Through these incentive schemes, Ireland hopes to achieve the following objectives

• increase afforestation cover from the relatively low level of 8% of the land area to 17% by the year 2035 objective which will require the annual planting of / 25,000 hectares to the year 2000 and 20,000 hectares from 2001 to 2035)

• increase broadleaf planting and planting of diverse species of conifers.
